How much does it cost to get Full Self Driving for you?
There’s been a lot of confusion over pricing with the recent price drop and changes by Tesla.
Assuming the goal is to get Full Self Driving, here’s a summary of what I think the options and total out-of-pocket is for the various scenarios:
- If you purchased prior to 28 FEB 2019 with EAP and FSD (when offered or off the secret menu), you paid $5k for EAP and $3k for FSD making the total for both EAP + FSD = $8k; Bonus: get auto-added to Early Access Program.
- If you purchased prior to 28 FEB 2019 without EAP and FSD, you will now be able to add: AP for $2k and FSD for $3k (per blog post from tesla) making the total for both AP+FSD = $5k
- If you purchased prior to 28 FEB 2019 with the $5k EAP, you will now be able to add: FSD for $2k (per Elon tweet #1 and Elon Tweet #2) making the total for both EAP+FSD = $7k
- If you took delivery in 2019 prior to 28 FEB 2019 with the $5k EAP, you will receive FSD at no charge.
- If you ordered a vehicle with $5k EAP but had not yet taken delivery by 28 FEB 2019, you will get FSD at no charge
- If you purchase a vehicle after the announcement, you can add at the time of order: AP for $3k and FSD for $5k making the total for both AP+FSD = $8k
- If you purchase a vehicle after the announcement, with $3k AP only, you can add post-delivery: FSD for $7k making the total for both AP+FSD = $10k
- If you purchase a vehicle after the announcement, without AP or FSD, you can add post-delivery: AP for $4k and FSD for $7k making the total for both AP+FSD = $11k

So, for some reason Tesla is clearly incentivizing the people who bought neither to jump in as they get the cheapest path to FSD at $5k, the next best are the folks who bought EAP, with their path to FSD at $7k. And the ‘early adopters’ paid $8k – same as people ordering today.
